Food Sensitivity
Symptoms of food sensitivity can vary to a great extend. However the symptoms of intolerance are all digestive-related.
These can include:
- Gas and bloating
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Cramping
- Nausea
Food Allergy
Food allergies can be fatal, unlike a food intolerance or sensitivity. In extreme cases, ingesting or even touching a small amount of the allergen can cause a severe reaction.
Symptoms of food allergy include:
- Skin reactions: like hives, swelling, and itching
- Anaphylaxis, including difficulty breathing, wheezing, dizziness, and death
- Digestive symptoms
Food Intolerance
It can be difficult to determine whether the patient has a food intolerance or an allergy because the signs and symptoms often overlap.
Most common intolerance symptoms are:
- Bloating
- Migraines & Headaches
- Cough & Runny nose
- Feeling under the weather
- Stomach Ache
- Irritable Bowel
- Hives
Allergy and Immonology
Gastrointestinal Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities, allergies, and intolerances may be divided into two types: IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated.
IgE-mediated
LgE-mediated means that IgE allergy antibodies are a cause of the allergic reaction to a food. By contrast, the signs and symptoms of IgE mediated food allergy usually occur within minutes of ingestion and include hives, redness of the skin, vomiting and in more severe reactions, anaphylaxis.
The mechanism of non-IgE-mediated food allergy is not well understood. Although the immune system is presumed to be involved, IgE antibodies are not associated with this condition, hence the term “non-IgE-mediated” food allergy.
This term is an umbrella term for a range of gastrointestinal food allergies that affect the full length of the gut.
Non-IgE-mediated
Non-IgE mediated food sensitivities, allergies, and intolerances are caused by a reaction involving other components of the immune system apart from IgE antibodies.
The reactions do not appear immediately after the ingestion of the food and usually relate to reactions in the gastrointestinal tract such as vomiting, bloating and diarrhea.
How does non-IgE-mediated food allergy differ from IgE mediated food allergy?
Non-IgE-mediated food allergy is less well understood than IgE-mediated food allergy. Because the symptoms are usually delayed as compared to IgE mediated food allergy it is more difficult to make the association between offending food and the symptoms.
The lack of easily accessible blood or skin tests also contributes to the problem. The most common causative foods for non-IgE-mediated food allergies are cow’s milk and soy proteins in infants and wheat in older children.
Unlike IgE mediated food allergy, non-IgE food allergies are very rarely life-threatening because they do not result in Anaphylaxis.
What are the common symptoms of non-IgE-mediated food sensitivities, allergies, and intolerances?
Common symptoms include abdominal discomfort, vomiting, and diarrhea. In some cases, constipation or colic can be the presenting symptoms.
The symptoms often take longer to develop (hours-days) rather than those of IgE mediated food allergies which frequently occur within 5 -30 minutes following food ingestion.
Sensitivity, Intolerance or Allergy? What you need to know.
What Exactly Is A Food Intolerance
An intolerance is when the body reacts in a negative way when exposed to certain items. This should not be confused with an allergy, which is a more severe reaction and tends to be lifelong condition.
An intolerance is the body’s inability to digest an item properly, whether this is a food intolerance or an environmental factor (a non-food intolerance). Intolerances can occur due to a number of reasons, the two most common are:
- The body is lacking the necessary digestive enzymes(s) for the certain food and therefore cannot digest the item properly or efficiently take the nutrients from it. A sensitivity resulting from over-consumption or overexposure.
- Many symptoms are the result of a sensitivity to a particular item. A sensitivity can occur from over consumption or overexposure of an item.
A food sensitivity is quite a bit harder to analyze because of the fact that it triggers an IgG response in your system, which is a postponed invulnerable or immune reaction to be precise.
It could take up to 72 hours for indications of a certain sensitivity to show up. The issue with this postponed reaction is that you likely eat an extensive variety of nourishments and foods in the time it takes for side effects to show up, making it hard to recognize when exactly a certain symptom occurs after eating a food.
Food Sensitivities can produce quite a few different symptoms. This is because the antibodies create differently on your body depending on the area. It could take quite a while to understand that a skin issue, headache or even joint pain is actually food related.
