Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the how and why of the new Corona virus. Scientists are very busy getting answers. Not only for an effective vaccine, but also to answer the question of why one person is more sensitive to the effects of the Corona virus than the other.
A few tentative conclusions have since been drawn by the World Health Organization:
Elderly and persons with pre-existing medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, cancer or diabetes. For these people, the consequences of contracting the Corona virus appear to be very serious, with hospitalization and possible death as a possible consequence.
Recently, the well-known actor Tom Hanks was diagnosed with the Corona virus. He also has type 2 diabetes. He indicated via his Instagram account that he remains in quarantine as a precaution. The actor seems to be doing well, and luckily the symptoms remained fairly mild. Good news for Tom Hanks, but these kind of messages stir up the discussion about how people with diabetes can be more susceptible to viruses.
I’ll explain it to you:
In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. In this case, the patient must take insulin every day. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin or uses it properly.
This is the most common form of diabetes. It is generally the dysfunction of the immune response that makes diabetics more susceptible to infection
Science thinks that hyperglycemia (too high sugar or glucose levels in the blood) in diabetics may be the cause of an impaired immune response, resulting in viruses being attacked less effectively, if at all, by the immune system.
This makes diabetics more susceptible to infections. It is therefore important for diabetics to avoid as much as possible that the blood sugar level is regularly too high. In addition, it is always wise to give your resistance an extra boost, including by eating healthy. Incidentally, not only for people from the risk groups, but for anyone who wants to be as resistant as possible to the possible consequences of contracting the Corona virus.
